The new Apple TV for $99

Steve Jobs just pulled out the world famous "one more thing" for nothing other than... a new Apple TV. It's now a streaming-focused device (as we predicted months ago) in a small matte black enclosure we're calling "the hockey puck." It has HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio, and USB plugs around back, and of course 802.11n for the cable-averse. Inside there ain't much -- there's no local storage, which makes this thing an entirely different beast than old Apple TVs. Those new streaming HD TV rentals from ABC and Fox will be a mere 99 cents, while first run HD movies will be a less thrilling $4.99. Other services include Netflix, YouTube, Flickr, and Mobile Me, along with Rotten Tomatoes integration in the movie catalog. You can also stream from your computer, if you miss those old hard drive-sourced days of yore, but iOS 4.2's AirPlay also enables streaming from an iPad straight to an Apple TV. The best news? Apple will start shipping this sucker four weeks from now for $99. Developing...

Apple announces iTunes 10 with Ping social network

Not a huge surprise here, but Apple's just announced iTunes 10 alongside all those new iPods, complete with a brand new logo that finally ditches the CD. What is something of a surprise, however, is the standout feature of iTunes 10: Ping. That's Apple's take on a music-centered social network (think Last.fm), which will let you follow people (including artists), establish a "circle of friends," post comments, check out custom song and album charts, and even find over 17,000 concert listings (which you can of course let folks know your attending). What's more, Ping is also making the jump to the iPhone and iPod touch, and it's available with iTunes 10 today.

iPod touch gets revamped: retina display, FaceTime, HD video recording

Current iPod touch wasn't thin enough for you? Look no further than... well, the new iPod touch just announced today. Naturally, Apple has re-upped its "iPhone without the phone" to include the Retina Display from the iPhone 4, an Apple A4 core, 3-axis gyroscope, Game Center, and FaceTime support thanks to the addition of a front cam. Oh, and speaking of cams, it's also got a rear cam capable of HD video -- but you'll be paying a bit more than you will for that cute little nano: $229 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB (yep, 16GB and 128GB are both no-shows). Ships next week, pre-orders start today.

Apple claims 50 percent of portable gaming market, iPod touch 'outsells Nintendo and Sony combined'

Nintendo famously called Apple the enemy of the future in the video gaming space, and by golly, it looks like the Japanese giant was right; Steve Jobs just told an audience that the iPod touch alone outsells Nintendo's DS and Sony's PlayStation Portable combined, worldwide. How many games iPod touch users actually play and for how long wasn't discussed, but Jobs said 1.5 billion "games and entertainment" apps have been downloaded -- again, on the iPod touch alone, never mind all those iPhones.

Apple demoes iOS 4.2, features AirPlay media streaming

Apple is also talking up iOS 4.2 today, which will be everything iOS 4.1 is bringing, plus some extra goodies, and will finally bring iOS 4 (hello multitasking!) to the iPad. The most exciting of the new features is AirPlay, which is Apple's redub for AirTunes, with the important addition of being able to stream music and video from your computer to your i-device over WiFi. Also over WiFi is a new wireless printing feature, complete with a little Print Center applet that sits in the dock and lets you manage your print jobs. It might not be sexy, but it's certainly a welcome addition to iOS. Apple will be launching iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices in November.

Apple ships 120 million iOS devices since iPhone's launch

Digg this!Steve Jobs just dropped a few numbers on us. Firstly, that big one above, 120 million iOS devices have been shipped since the iPhone's debut back in 2007. 230,000 is the next number of significance -- that's the tally of daily iOS activations. Moving down to even more granular stats, Apple says 200 apps are being downloaded every second, which has resulted in the mind-bending 6.5 billion total downloads of iOS applications. This is

At the Apple press event today, CEO Steve Jobs announced that 6.5 billion apps has been downloaded from the App Store. This number contains both iPad and iPhone apps. Apple hit the 1 billion download in Spring of 2009, so this has been some pretty impressive growth for number of apps downloaded.

As Apple dissenters are more than eager to tell you, a front-facing camera is nothing new; it's been available oversears for years. However, Apple did include something with every iPhone 4 they shipped that set it apart from other devices with front-facing cameras: FaceTime.

It seems like just yesterday, we were fighting our way through traffic on the way to Apple's iPhone 4 antenna press conference. Today, we're joining Apple for something a bit less out-of-the-blue: their annual September product announcement in San Francisco. So, what's coming? New iPod Touches? A brand new, iOS-powered AppleTV (which may or may not be known as the iTV)? Join us after the jump for the liveblog.

Just last week, a couple of much-trusted birdies popped into the MobileCrunch office, claiming to have some details on SkyFire (a Flash-friendly mobile browser already available on a number of smartphone platforms) and its impending iPhone release. "They've entered the very final round of testing!" they said. "It's going to get submitted to Apple early next week!" We're one day past what we'd personally consider "early next week", but sure enough: SkyFire has just announced that they've submitted the browser for Apple's oh-so-important stamp of approval. Start the timers, folks.

Last year, Aurora Feint launched a comprehensive social gaming platform dubbed OpenFeint. The platform has seen considerable success in attracting independent iPhone game developers to its rapidly growing community and Android developers as well. Today, the network is launching PlayTime, a set of technologies that will allow developers to make real-time multiplayer games with voice chat across iOS and Android. PlayTime for Casual Games gives developers the tools to create a simple multiplayer game based on highscore competition. The PlayTime for Casual Games SDK will include drop in widgets for displaying progress, an embedded VoIP client for group voice chat, a lobby, a matchmaking system for starting sessions, and a synchronized event system for passing data between games.

When you think about broadcasting live video over the Internet, being tethered to your computer isn't so much fun. Broadcasting live from your mobile phone, now that starts to get interesting. Today, Justin.tv is joining the mobile party with an Android app for broadcasting live video (which will be available later today). A similar iPhone app is also in the works (it's current iPhone app is view-only). While Justin.tv may be a little late to the party, it comes bearing some new gifts. The Android app takes advantage of hardware video encoding, which drains the battery less. It also adjusts the bitrate at which the video is uploaded, depending on the strength of your wireless connection.

Apple unable to keep up with iPhone 4 demand, say execs

Apple is still unable to cope with interest in the iPhone 4, two of the company's key executives indicate. A Deutsche Bank analyst, Chris Whitmore, recently met with CFO Peter Oppenheimer and senior VP of retail Ron Johnson to discuss the state of sales. "iPhone 4 demand remains very robust and despite efforts to close the supply-demand imbalance and the continued supply ramp, Apple still cannot meet iPhone demand," Whitmore says of the discussion....
