Apple iPhone 3G makes its India debut

Apple Inc's iPhone 3G made its debut in India on Friday minus the mass hysteria and winding queues that had marked its launch in the U.S., Europe and parts of Asia last month.

Rumor: White iPhones hitting the UK on the morrow?

Good lord, sir! Could it be true? Why, my china told me they wouldn’t have the white ones till the jolly season! Positively shocking, old sport. Hot tipper Kat tells us “a loose-lipped employee” (of what company she did not mention) said the white iP3G would be unleashed tomorrow instead of during the holidays. Seems a [...]

Angry Customer Sues Apple Over Lack of 3G on iPhone 3G

Well, it looks like someone has finally had enough of the iPhone 3G. At least that's what we can glean from reports that an iPhone customer has filed a lawsuit against Apple because the phone doesn't live up to its advertised abilities.   I can understand being seriously disappointed by a product's performance, but the phone has [...]

White iPhone 3G rumored for UK launch on Friday

Apple UK will begin selling the white iPhone 3G tomorrow, Friday 22nd, through its own stores, O2 and retail partner Carphone Warehouse.  According to a loose-lipped UK source connected with the handset, the white 16GB version - which, unlike in the US, has not been available to UK buyers - will be announced at the end of [...]

Hands On With OpenPeak's Atom-Powered Home Media Phone [Home Phone Overkill]

Slotting an Atom into a home phone just sounds plain ridiculous, but the Home Media Phone is more than just a VoIP handset and base station. The base station (which doubles as a speaker phone) has its own software platform, developed in flash and furnished with a full API, and serves many purposes of a PC in a picture frame-sized package. The current set of apps is adequate, but after using it for a few minutes it became very clear that the Home Media Phone could actually be a fantastic net appliance.

Like half the products at IDF, this the Media Phone has a touch interface, which at the moment looks an awful lot like the iPhone's. Using it is easy, and it's at a size and orientation that makes for comfortable casual use. The screen was responsive enough for sustained use without frustration, and navigating the interfaces was—and this is really the only thing that matters on these small devices—painless. The handset was attractive and felt solid, though it's currently not touch-enabled (I was assured that this would be rectified by launch).

In its current state it's difficult to see what exactly the Media Phone is meant to do. It's got no browser, but an RSS reader. It can connect with home automation software and control household electronics, but it's stuck to the wall with a power cord. In response to these concerns, the guys at the booth were keen to tell me about the API, which would allow developers to enable a vastly larger set of apps and features. Those customizations will be the deciding factor in whether or not this phone is at all successful. Well, that and its price. OpenPeak says that their first units could ship to customers as soon as January of next year, and they will all be sold with subsidies as part of VoIP service contracts. Negotiations are under way, but the OpenPeak guys say it's conceivable that the units could be free. [Giz at IDF]

The Maps Of The Future Look Like Giant Cracker Jack Toys

Paper maps are a pain. They’re clunky, get torn easily, and never seem to fold back the way they’re supposed to. Sure, you can always turn to a laptop or iPhone to get a digital copy, but most transit websites are painfully slow and difficult to navigate. What’s a wandering traveler to [...]

iPhone 3G rolling worldwide, Russia coming soon

Filed under:

Thanks to the magic of time zones, the iPhone 3G is already on its worldwide march across 21 countries.

Tipster Lawrz let us know that the handset is on sale in the Philippines from Globe Telecom, after a sold-out party that started at 10 p.m. local time counting down to midnight August 22. It's already Friday in India, and midnight is just now crossing Europe, as of this writing.

Also, tipster Efthymios tells us that Vodafone Hellas is distributing unlocked iPhone 3Gs, as is the law there. 8GB models are €499 and 16GB models are €569. Contracts plans for the handsets have not been announced, but should be available in the next few hours. However, Efthymios notes that Greek character input is not yet available for the iPhone, with many people having to resort using "Greeklish" instead: Greek words typed with English characters.

Reuters notes today that Russia will also be getting the iPhone 3G in October. Apple struck a deal with the country's largest mobile provider, MTS, which has nearly 84 million subscribers

Thanks, Lawrz and Efthymios!
