IPhone Fix Silently Lands

Secretive Apple shuffles out a fix to end customers' 3G woes

iPodObserver - Apple Facing iPhone 3G Class-action Lawsuit

Apple's iPhone 3G launched on July 11 and thanks to spotty cell reception it is already facing its first potential class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit, filed by Jessica Alena Smith on Tuesday, claimed that Apple's marketing hype doesn't reflect the slow data connection speeds and dropped calls that many iPhone 3G owners are experiencing

Class action suit filed over Apple's 3G speed claims

A class action suit has been filed by a Birmingham Alabama woman that accuses Apple of deceptive advertising in their claim that the 3G iPhone is "twice as fast" as the previous model. AppleInsider has more details. Always referring to the device as the "Defective iPhone 3G," Smith and her legal team assert that e-mail, text, and most other downloads were considerably slower than what Apple promised. This in no small part stemmed from the reliability of the connection: the device would connect to 3G less than a quarter of the time to 3G even in areas AT&T; says should provide "excellent" coverage, according to the lawsuit. I've previously mentioned my problems with the lack of AT&T; 3G coverage in...

Make an iPhone Ringtone in iTunes for Windows [How To]

itunes_ringtone.pngWe've shown you how you can turn your (non-DRM-protected) music collection into custom iPhone ringtones using GarageBand and iTunes on a Mac, or software like ToneShop for Windows, but the CyberNet tech site's made it easy for those with just a copy of iTunes for Windows to hack together their own tones. The basic trick is to single out a short section of a song in iTunes, export it to a non-protected AAC/M4A format, then do a quick file extension switch and re-upload it to iTunes. CyberNet details the process in greater detail, of course, and it's a nice fix for those who don't want to edit waveform files just to rock out to 20 seconds of "London Calling."

OpenFrame touchscreen homephone goes Atom, gets demoed on video, is still a landline phone

Filed under:

We first saw OpenPeak's OpenFrame home phone at CES, where it was sporting various FreeScale and ARM chips under the hood, but it looks like things have changed in development -- the company has been showing off production-ready units built on Atom chips at IDF. OpenPeak says that the ease of building for IA32 sped up development completely, and that only a fraction of the CPU is being used, giving the product room to grow -- probably a good thing, seeing as it supports open application development, rich services, and syncs with your PC and cell phone contacts and calendars. Of course, that still doesn't change the fact that it's a landline phone, and we're just not certain consumers are really clamoring for a $200 to $300 landline phone -- even it does rock a distinctly familiar touch interface. Anyone going to take the plunge when this thing hits in the first quarter of next year?

Purported iPhone Nike+ screenshots found to be fake

Filed under:

And to think, we actually believed that Nike and Apple were this close to delivering the long-awaited running application for the iPhone. While it was widely reported that these shots were indeed the real deal, AppleInsider is pointing out a chink in the armor: Cupertino doesn't offer iPhone developers a programming interface for accessing one's music, yet this mysterious program clearly showed someone listening to Chris Martin and friends (an unreleased song, evidently) while attempting to make it to 0.02km. The take away? It's still pretty likely that the two outfits are working to create a fitness program for the App Store, but those screenshots ain't it.

[Thanks, Michael]

AppleInsider reveals details of my WWDC Presentation

.NET blogger has his presentation "leaked", but the broader questions about NDA's and in particular the iPhone SDK NDA comes up. I agree, don't like it, don't sign it. However, you have to agree with the comment w.r.t. to a community, to really launch iPhone engineering... there is a tangible need for a forum for open communication.

Yay: Facebook for iPhone 2.0 looks a lot more like the Web site

Most of us here are pretty much “done” with Facebook, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore the upcoming release of Facebook for iPhone 2.0, which is scheduled to come out next month. As these few screenshots show, the application looks a lot more like the recently redesigned Web site itself. Users are pretty much able [...]

Apple confirms iPhone 2.0.2 addresses 3G bugs

Although Apple has never given us a proper changelog with its software updates, an Apple spokesperson has provided a tiny but important detail on the iPhone firmware 2.0.2 released earlier this week. According to an Associated Press article, the update "improved communication with 3G networks," said Apple spokesperson Jennifer Bowcock. Why couldn't they just say that in a changelog? I know that it's technically a "bug" and so it would fall under the generic "bux fixes" catchall that they use. But still, a little more detail is in order for Apple's software updates as they currently border on offensive. Despite Bowcock's comments about the update addressing 3G reception issues, the verdict is mixed with some seeing improvements while others aren't....
