Amazon streaming 99-cent ABC and Fox shows... right now (update: purchases, not rentals!)

Eager to get on the new Apple TV's cheap 99-cent TV show rentals but not so pumped to wait four weeks for it to ship? No worries: Amazon's also now offering 99-cent rentals purchases of various ABC and FOX shows, which means a whole host of Amazon VOD-compatible devices just got some cheaper streaming options as well -- and hey, Roku just cut prices on its entire lineup of Amazon- and Netflix- compatible players, so you can get in the game for as little as $60. Of course, the Apple TV also features day-and-date movie rentals, local streaming, AirPlay, and that slick iPhone / iPod touch Remote app, but only your heart truly knows if those are worth an extra few bucks and a month of fevered desire.

Update: As our astute commenters are pointing out, these are actually listed as 99-cent purchases, making this a far better deal entirely. We don't know if that's for real or just an error right now, though -- we're double checking and we'll let you know.

Update 2: Yep, we've confirmed that these are 99-cent purchases, making this a much better deal than Apple's rental model -- although only you can decide whether you actually need permanent streaming access to Dollhouse Season 2.

[Thanks, Stephen]

Ping trademarks filed by golf gear company

Apple's name for its new social network, Ping, is interestingly generic. With a long association to the sport of table tennis and a computer networking utility whose function resembles it, it carries a natural association with communication, responsiveness, and so on. But like many generic terms, if you do a search for "Ping" at the trademark office's website, you'll find many, many entries. Most recent filings are from Karsten Manufacturing Corporation, which makes golf gear. Interestingly many of its filings go beyond the sticks to include computer and internet-related stuff. This mark, for example, is for goods and services concerning "Communications software for electronically exchanging data." Though filed on April 7, 2010, it's already been abandoned. I've put in a call to ask why, and whether they've had any chats with Apple. Most of the "Ping" trademark filings from Karsten, however, remain live. It also has an iPhone app....

It's a promise sounds too good to be true: free, unlimited texting to and from your iPhone. And even if a service did manage to offer it, it certainly couldn't be sustainable, could it? Pinger, a startup that launched back in 2006 as a voicemail service but has since pivoted in a big way, would beg to differ: the company has managed to become immensely popular on the iPhone by offering free text messages to users through an application called Textfree. And it's just blown past another major milestone: users have sent 3.5 billion text messages using Textfree since it launched in March 2009. So how do the do it? The key, unsurprisingly, is ads. Textfree has gotten such massive distribution that it can now turn a profit by placing ads in the application (the company has been profitable since December). Textfree doesn't insert ads into your conversations — rather, it shows basic display ads which get 1.4 billion ad impressions a month.

FCC officials today tossed rumors [sub. required] that they were softening plans for net neutrality regulation. A Credit Suisse investment analyst had claimed earlier in the day that the FCC was giving up and would please telecom companies by conceding to their demands....

One of the big announcements at Apple's event today was Ping, the music social network that Apple has baked into iTunes. But it's not just on iTunes for the computer, it's also a part of iTunes on the iPhone and iPod touch. This will be a part of the new iOS 4.1 release which is going out to developers right now, and should be out for consumers next week. In the demo area after the event, Apple had a bunch of iPod touches loaded with iOS 4.1, so we got to play around with it. It's a pretty slick experience on the device because it's so simple. Below find some pictures of how it works.

The figure doesn't include Android, though it has far lower share at just 0.2 percent....
